Eamon's Burn

On August 28th, Patrick was coming home late from work, and I was trying to grill some hamburgers.   Eamon is much too curious about the grill to have him outside while I grill, so he and Connor were inside.  As I'm getting the burgers off of the grill, Connor opens the door and they both come out, Connor going from the water table and Eamon going for the grill.  He walked right up and touches the side of it, very close to the flame.  He was crying really hard, but I was yelling at both of them because I didn't wanted them outside.  I rushed Eamon inside and looked him over in the bathroom, but his hand was clenched over his burn, so I didn't see it.  I put them both in their room (at this point they were both hysterical), go get the meat off the grill, and Patrick got home.  We were trying to eat, but Eamon could not calm down.  Patrick felt like it couldn't just be tiredness causing Eamon to be so upset, so he examined him for burns again. Eamon's little palm was burned all along one side and on his fingertips.  We called our doctor and he told us to take Eamon to the ER.  By the time Eamon and I got back into the triage room, Eamon had calmed down a lot since we had given him some ibuprofen.  They gave him some Tylenol too, and we were sent back to a room to see the doctor, who gave us some good cream and dressed it for us.
Getting some milk.
Eamon was Mr. Social Butterfly.  While in the triage room, he kept making me take him in the hall where the people were.  When we were in the room to see the doctor, he left the room at every opportunity, padding down the hallway to see the sights.  Pretty adorable.
The nurse gave him this popsicle.
This was probably the only time he had
it in his mouth.  Too cold!
Leaving mama in the dust!
One of the people helping me with the paperwork turned out to be a classmate of Patrick's named Obed.  Obed had actually started a little company that Patrick was a part of (although the company never produced anything before Patrick "resigned").  He also played at our wedding with his band!  It was fun to see Obed!
Eamon's 2nd dressing.
Duct tape was necessary.
Patrick took Eamon to a follow up appointment with our doctor the next day.  Dr. O'Neill told Patrick that children like Eamon (read: wild and reckless) never learn to avoid dangerous behavior.  I expect many ER trips in the future!
At my cousin Jordan's wedding, 2 days after the burn.
Little sweetness.
We kept the full bandage on for several days, redressing and putting the expensive burn cream on every day.  All of his fingertips had big blisters and half of his palm was one giant blister.  One day, while we were airing his hand out, he just took his little teeth and ripped his palm blister open! Plasma just poured out down his mouth and on his chest. It was sick! The skin underneath looked really raw, but Eamon never seemed to be bothered by any pain.

Here we are, 4 weeks after he burned his hand, and you can barely tell.  The skin is still a different texture where it is healing, but it's doing well.  Thank God for the resilience of babies!
